All Arai add-on accessories are made with plastic, designed to be both lightweight and frangible so they crush, break or come off under impact so as not to catch on an obstacle or the ground during an impact, which may send energy into the helmet or create excessive rotational force. Crushing, breaking, or coming off allows the helmets to slide past or “glance off” some of that energy, minimizing how much gets into the helmet.
